Evidence will not convince people uninterested in evidence

So Hameed Haroon gave an interview to BBC and this was a Very Big Deal, mainly because all allegations against the military were shown to be spurious.

Everyone at Daw(N), you have been XPOZED. Pack it up, boys.

Here's the thing: if you've gotten this far in life -- all the way to July 17, 2018 -- without accepting that the military establishment has censored the media in the distant and recent past and continues to do so in the very, very present, then no interview, no one-line zinger, no "aha, gotcha" moment, no pile of evidence is going to convince you. So can we please stop pretending otherwise? It's not like these GHQ fanboys were sitting at home with monocles and lawyer wigs and thinking "Yes sir, I will carefully and impartially consider the evidence forthcoming in this Hameed Haroon interview and then make a call about the military's influence in politics." Please. Don't indulge the fantasy and don't fall for their concern trolling. Yes, Hameed Haroon could have given a more solid interview on a different day, but it would not have affected these peoples' worldviews one bit.

Speaking of GHQ fanboys impervious to evidence, I recently had a thought about Imran Khan. It was spurred by this, the day 150 Pakistanis were killed.

Even before his ascension as selected PM, one has to wonder about the juxtaposition of, on the one hand, the lived experiences of people who actually fought the TTP with, on the other, Imran's dumb ideas about the provenance of the war (America; selling out) and its trajectory (ebbs and flows with Kulsoom Nawaz's cancer and Maryam's campaign rallies). GHQ has its share of ham-handed ideas about the war, to be sure, but they at least recognize that "the Taliban" is a real thing and actually exists. It is clear that Imran Khan does not. I really would love to be a fly on the wall the first time there is a meeting between the selected PM and, say, the COAS and DGMO, and Im the Dim regales them with his theories.

And of course, there is nothing quite like becoming Prime Minister to make oneself aware of where one parts from GHQ's received wisdom. Yes, for now, married by convenience, there's a lot IK and his handlers agree on about the state of the world. But this is not a partnership I would buy a lot of stock in, especially once you add cocaine and Imran's ego to the already-combustible mix. GHQ has pined for Nawaz Sharif to be taken down for years, and they've found their man, I guess, but be careful what you wish for, guys.

  1. Was expecting a much lengthier take on this storm in the cup. What we have learnt from the past especially in memo gate and Dawn leaks cases, the power to be has great propaganda machine at their disposal and can create self serving narrative with a bit of help from PTI trolls.
