Things I won't miss about the Trump era

 1. Important, concerned voice (usually in DC or NY, usually white, usually well-meaning liberal) posting a worrisome picture or article with the words "This is not Belarus/Bosnia/Botswana. This is happening right here, folks." Please shut the hell up. 

2. Erstwhile and Lincoln Project-type Republicans talking about a "personality cult". It wasn't a personality cult. It was a party ruthlessly following its interests and the imperatives of its narrowing demographic base. Making it about "personality" and Trump elides how much of this is institutional and would happen again with Pompeo/Haley/the next Q-Anon star in the House. If you were or are a conservative, you helped bring this about. Like, James Baker voted for Donald Trump. Own it. 

3a. NYT stories about diners in the midwest. 

3b. Concerned trolling from right-wingers telling liberals they should understand rural racists better, notwithstanding the existence of 3a. 

4. Glenn Greenwald and his ilk

5. The too-little, too-late calling out of his lies, racism etc. I love how Twitter, Facebook, journalists, anchors, "moderate" Republicans etc suddenly discovered a spine (e.g. using the word "lie"; social media putting warnings on his posts) around November 3, 2020. Where were you guys for five years? You realize you could have done this earlier, right?

My 15 worst travel experiences on a Pakistani passport (Part 1)

Last Friday, I became a U.S. citizen. The main difference between having a green card (which I had for the last 5 years) and citizenship is (a) being able to vote, and (b) being able to travel like a normal human being.  I missed the boat on (a) by about a month but this post is concerned with (b). People from brown and black countries often have a really tough time explaining to the rest of the world (not just Westerners) just how insanely challenging and spirit-breaking international travel is.  Some of this ignorance comes from them thinking their experience is representative: if travel is seamless for them, it must be so for everyone. Others are aware of things like "visas" but believe that it's a small bureaucratic hurdle, akin to getting a driver's license. A select few, because their friends, family, or educational background, go so far as to be basically aware of the reality of first world vs third world citizenship. Eight scenarios for the 2018 elections

There has been considerable concern about the level of engineering behind these elections. Which is of course fair enough. Nevertheless, it bears mentioning that the outcome of this election is still technically up in the air. This is not a Stalin or Saddam style rigging project. As much as GHQ has tilted the playing field in the last few months, Pakistani voters still exercise agency . The generals have had their say, but on July 25, the people get a go. While it is reasonable to surmise that the establishment's efforts have made the entire thing foreordained, I think there's still some grey area, if only because we know (hope?) that full-blown ballot stuffing and miscounting of votes is not on the cards.
